MERRY-go-round
What a thrill, when it came to town!
All the local families rode to the fairgrounds -
A thousand lights, and smells, and sounds,
And at the center of it all,
My very favorite merry-go-round!
Think I was five, surely no more,
But I remembered my stallion from the year before -
He was tan, and gold, and white -
A thoroughbred unequaled in my wide-eyed sight!
I climbed up on him, and tried to brace
For our mad gallop - our timeless race -
I felt the thunder within his hooves,
The wind, the music, and then - then, we flew!
On a magical wind, we flew!
We flew on a magical wind that lives, yet is never again -
All these years later, whenever I see
A carousel, that memory washes over me,
And cherished, sings that distant place
Where a tan, noble steed never, ever, ever lost a race -
Never, ever, ever lost a race
On that magical wind.....
